Making a Difference with wildlife rescue

My name is Lori Morgan, I am a state licensed wildlife rehabilitator and licensed for rabies vector species which means I can take in raccoons, skunks, coyotes, bats, and bobcats. I take in everything in but birds because you must be federal licensed. I have been a wildlife rehabilitator for 6 years. I take in many different species of wildlife every year that are sick, orphaned, or injured and care for them until they can be released back into their natural habitat. Animal rehabilitation includes feeding, cleaning cages, record keeping, accounting, fundraising, answering phone calls about injured animals, and educating the public. Wildlife rehabilitators may also catch, transport injured animals, and arrange veterinary care. 

In the state of Georgia, wildlife rehabilitators work on a volunteer basis and do not get paid. I pay for supplies and equipment. While the primary focus of rehabilitation is care for wildlife, rehabilitators must also become knowledgeable in the vast array of federal and state statutes, regulations, and department of wildlife policies which affect their ability to operate lawfully. 

As a rehabilitator, I examine, diagnose, and prescribe the necessary course of treatment for the wildlife I care for. Treatment is provided by the rehabilitators themselves, but veterinary assistance is sought as needed and especially performing euthanasia.

Rehabbers are familiar with individual species’ eating habits and when necessary, find suitable alternatives to provide adequate nutrition.
